Mr. Hanley is our white-and-gray spotted miniature mule — loyal, fuzzy, spirited, and slightly delusional about his dating prospects. With his big heart and short legs, he has become both a source of daily amusement and an unexpected emotional anchor on the farm.
The Road to Triple "5" Farms
Hanley’s story began when a farm proprietor reached out, looking to rehome a few of her animals. She had spent years running a portable petting zoo, visiting fairs and children's events, but it was time for a new chapter — and a new pasture for her four-legged companions.
Emily was immediately intrigued when she heard “miniature horse.” A sucker for small, quirky animals, she lit up at the idea of adding one to her dream lineup of farm critters. With my background in logistics, the 4-hour trip across East Tennessee was no sweat. We loaded up and headed out.
When we arrived, Hanley was standing there like the gentle clown he is — alert, calm, and completely unaware of how many hearts he'd melt. The proprietor was also rehoming a friendly Nigerian goat named Buddy and a pig named Miss Piggy. Without hesitation, Emily decided they all belonged with us. We loaded them up and brought them home to Triple "5" Farms.
We believed we had brought home a miniature horse. But the very next morning, when Hanley stood in the field, looked up at the sky, and let out a long, unmistakable bray — that theory fell apart.
“That ain’t no horse,” we said, laughing. “That’s a miniature mule!”
And that’s how we learned — after the fact — that Mr. Hanley was not what he seemed. But by then, it didn’t matter. He had already won us over. Hoof, ears, voice, and all.
Short in Height, Big in Heart
Hanley is a true character. His coat is a soft white with gray patches, his eyes kind and expressive. His legs are short, his ears a bit longer than average, and his tail swishes with the confidence of someone twice his size. Based on appearance, we estimate him to be a miniature mule, likely a cross between a miniature donkey and a small pony or miniature horse.
He stands around 9 hands tall (36 inches at the withers), which makes him the shortest member of the herd — and perhaps the most determined.
Sadie's Number One Fan
For the past year, Hanley has spent his days alongside his pasture-mate and longtime crush, Sadie. He follows her like a shadow, gazes up at her with stars in his eyes, and tries his best to impress her — despite her occasional eyerolls and aloof responses. She tolerates his antics. He worships the ground she walks on.
Sadie’s not really into short guys… but Hanley’s trying to change her mind.
Life as a Companion Animal
Hanley doesn’t work the fields or pull a cart — his job is moral support, comic relief, and being ridiculously photogenic. Whether he’s braying for attention, nudging your arm for treats, or stubbornly standing in the exact wrong spot, Hanley is part of the daily rhythm here.
He’s not just a miniature mule. He’s a big presence in a small package. A beloved character in our pasture drama. A loyal, fuzzy friend who found his forever home and never looked back.
Forever at Home
Hanley reminds us that every animal has value, and every heart — no matter the size — has room to give and receive love. He’s proof that the best things often come with long ears, muddy hooves, and a slightly mischievous twinkle in their eye.
Mr. Hanley — tiny hooves, huge charm, and a love story that’s still unfolding one bray at a time.
